Upon Arrival
The puppy/dog/kitten/cat will come to you almost always having received its first vaccine, been de-wormed
and de-flead. Sometimes, the animal will need a bit of time before we vaccinate. We will then ask you to bring the animal back to be vaccinated at a later stage. The adoption officer will have the vaccination card so will therefore remind you when the next vaccination is due, and he/she will ask you to bring the animal here unless otherwise specified.
Now your aim as a foster parent it to take good care of your foster animal and provide basic training in order for the best chance of him/her to find their forever home.
Please take a photograph of the animal and send it to adoptions@africantails.co.za / 084 559 1542 ASAP so that we can load it onto website and start advertising in search of a forever home.
African Tails supplies the food and will provide any neccesary ticks and flea treatment, de-worming and vaccinations. We have two private vets that offer us welfare rates. Vet Point in Sea Point and Vet Clin in Tableview. See details below. This would be anything that we don't offer here at the office on a day to day basis like check-ups if the animal seems sick, emergencies, sterilisation if for some reason it cannot be done here, or any other approved check that needs to happen by a vet.
PLEASE call us when or before an animal needs to see a vet.
If there is a medical emergency after hours or on the weekend and you cannot get hold of us, please don't hesitate to take the animal to one of our designated vets if possible OR to your nearest vet. We will then have to settle the account as soon as we are able or we will refund you.
Please ensure you keep the animal enclosed in your property and/or on a lead when taken for a walk. The animal must be kept safe from harm and treated as a member of the family with lots of TLC.

Adoption Procedure
We will screen all applicants and should we find them suitable, will refer them to you so that you can make arrangements for them to view the foster animal. In such cases, we also appreciate your input and feedback on potential homes. We would then need to do a site visit prior to the animal leaving your care and may, in some cases, request your assistance in this regard.
No animal is to leave your care without our confirmation that forms have been completed, home check approved and please also ensure that if you end up with the vaccination booklet it goes with the dog/cat to his/her new home.
Ownership:
Please remember; the animal remains the property of African Tails throughout foster care and when re-homed for the duration of its life. No animal may be transferred to another location or person without the express written permission of African Tails. Under the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962 you as the Foster Parent are responsible for the well being of the animal whilst the animal is in your care (any person having the possession, charge, custody or control of that animal).
Remember the animal’s right to the five freedoms: freedom from hunger & thirst, from physical discomfort and pain, from injury and disease, from fear and distress and conformity to essential behavioral patterns.
