  • IF YOU HAVE YOUNG CHILDREN PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY!

    PLEASE NOTE:

Given our extensive experience with adopting puppies and dogs to homes with young children, there are a number of important points to remember.

    1. Having a puppy/dog is like having another child
    2. Dogs/Puppies require constant training and supervision from an early age, affection, exercise, stimulation, companionship/constant attention.
    3. Financial commitment
    4. Lifetime commitment +- 15 years
    5. Puppies nip, jump up, scratch and love to chew– that is normal!
  • African Tails Adoption Agreement and Contract

     I The Adopter agree:

    1) In the event that you decide to emigrate without your adopted pet and:

    * A suitable home is not found in time between yourself and African Tails.

    * We dont have a foster home, capacity or financial means to take your animal in.

This will lead to the strong possibility of you having to take your animal to be put to sleep. There are too many unwanted animals and not enough homes. This is the reality, even without the extra presssure of animals being left behind after their owners leave the country.

    2) If you adopted animal starts to show behaviour issues, you have agreed to seek help right away from a behaviourist/trainer at your own expense. African Tails cannot carry this cost, this is part of responsible pet ownership. You are welcome to contact us for advice and support.

    3) That this adoption has been approved by African Tails, in its sole discretion, who reserves the right to:
    *  Visit the premises where the adopted animal will be kept prior to adoption
    *  Visit the adopted animal after adoption

    4)  On adoption of the animal, African Tails remain the custodians with the applicant being the care-giver. Should the adopted animal be treated improperly in the opinion of African Tails, we reserve the right to remove the adopted animal for whatever reason we see fit.

    5)  If the adopted animal is under the adequate sterilisation age, the animal will be sterilised at 5/6 months old by African Tails. Should the adopted animal be sterilised by a private vet, proof of the sterilization papers must be submitted to African Tails immediately. Sterilisation is COMPULSORY. If an accidental pregnancy results at any time after adoption, the Adopter MUST report this to African Tails immediately.

    6)  NO BREEDING OF THE ADOPTED ANIMAL IS PERMITTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES AND ABORTION OF FEOTUSES WILL BE ENFORECED

     7)  The applicant accepts full responsibility for the adopted animal's health and welfare. The Adopter agrees:
    *  To feed the animal and provide its full daily nutritional requirements by supplying a quality pet food.
    *  To provide the adopted animal with shelter at all times.
    *  To provide proper housing for the adopted animal
    *  That this is a house pet, and will NOT be kept primarily or permanently outside. When outdoors, the adopted animal must have access to          shade and shelter from the elements. The adopted animal MUST sleep indoors at night in the owner's house.
    *  To ensure that all vaccinations are kept up-to-date, and in the case of injury or illness, the Adopter will ensure that the adopted animal                receives the necessary professional veterinary treatment.
    *  To identify the adopted animal with a microchip which is included in the adoption fee.
    *  To notify African Tails within 24 hours should the adopted animal go missing and within 48 hours should the adopted animal die.
    *  That he/she can afford the services of a private veterinary practitioner when necessary

    8)  In the event that the Adopters’ address changes at any time, he/she agrees to notify African Tails and will schedule a time with African Tails to inspect the new residence, and to update the microchip details.

    9)  The Adopter takes full responsibility for the continuation of up to date vaccinations and rabies boosters, worm and flea prevention. African         Tails may contact the Adopter’s vet to verify that these shots are up yo date.

    10)  The Adopter will allow African Tails or its agent to inspect the home before and/or after adoption and to allow African Tails or its agent to           remove the adopted animal immediately if the home or surroundings are found to be unsuitable or terms of this agreement are not met.

    11)  African Tails makes no warranties, representations or guarantees whatsoever as to the adult size, temperament, characteristics or health of said adopted animal and hereby disclaim all implied or expressed warranties of fitness.

    12)  African Tails will not be responsible for any medical care or costs there of required after adoption of the animal. African Tails will not be held responsible for any sickness incurred by the said animal before or after receipt by the adopter.

    13)  The adopted animal must remain in the custody and possession of the Adopter. The Adopter may not sell, trade, give away or dispose of this animal in any way. If the Adopter cannot keep said animal for any reason, he/she MUST CONTACT AFRICAN TAILS IMMEDIATELY.

    14)  Where the adopter is unable to keep the animal for whatsoever reason, It will be the responsibility of the adopter to find a suitable new home for the animal. Once a suitable home has been sourced by the owner, details of the new adoptive family will be supplied to African Tails and the new owners will have to follow the normal adoption procedures as prescribed by African Tails. African Tails will remain the custodian of the animal and will endeavour to assist in re-homing the animal as far as possible but the onus to rehome the animal stays on the adoptee.

    15)  Please note, that African Tails does NOT do trial basis adoptions. If an Adopter surrenders an animal back to our rescue, he/she will not be eligible to adopt any other animal from African Tails unless there are extenuating circumstances and African Tails management have approved a future adoption with another animal.

    16)  Should any part of the Adoption Application form or information supplied by the Adopter have been falsified in any way, the adoption is null and void and the adopted animal must be surrendered back to African Tails. We will enforce this strictly and we will ensue all legal forms of action to repossess the adopted animal. The Adopter will be responsible for any and all attorney, court filing fees, other legal service fees or any additional expenditures incurred in order to enforce the breach of contract due to false information.

    17) By completing and submitting this Adoption Form and Agreement you consent to African Tails collecting, processing, storing and sharing with third parties the information contained herein, in terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 and any amendment or successor legislation thereto, for purposes of assessing the adoption application, conducting home checks, recordkeeping, enforcement, monitoring and doing whatever else may be necessary to give effect to any obligation or right provided for herein, as well as any other obligation or right created in terms of the laws of the Republic of South Africa.

  • Why do we ask an adoption fee?

    • Fostering a dog/cat means that for the time the animal is in foster care, we need to: feed him/her, de-worm, treat for ticks&fleas, test cats for FIV and FELV, vaccinate as well as pay for any veterinary costs if the animal gets sick or comes in needing on-going treatments for a certain duration. The adoption fee also covers the sterilisation of your pet as well as a microchip. Adopting a dog or cat means making a financial commitment for the rest of your pets’ life, so to ensure a sensible, responsible decision and as reassurance that those who adopt our doggies are willing and able to afford the costs of caring for them properly we ask that people “pay” a small fee for the invaluable gift of loving and loyal companionship.
    • Purchasing a pedigree from a breeder usually costs a lot more.  Purchasing a dog from a “backyard” breeder usually EXCLUDES any initial vaccinations and sterilisation (sterilisation alone at a private vet would be around R2000, depending on the size of the animal and the gender) So although these fees seem “steep” – it’s actually a real bargain!

    Adoption Fees:

    • The fee for dogs and puppies is R1100.
    • This adoption fee covers all vaccinations up to the date of adoption, sterilisation and microchipping.
    • Depending on the vaccination status of the animal adopted, further vaccinations due thereafter can be done at your own private vet at your own expense.
    • All monies paid for adoption of an animal is non-refundable.
